Cultural Activities
We are planning optional weekend excursions to the famous Mexican
archaeological cites: El Tajin, Oaxaca city (Monte Alban) and Palenque.
The groups to El Tajin and Oaxaca will be leaving INAOE on Saturday morning,
and return to the INAOE on Sunday evening. The nowaday estimates of the
one night stay in the hotel is about 1000 Mexican pesos per person both, in
the El Tajin area and in the Oaxaca city. The cost of transportation will
depend on the number of persons and is expected to be in the range 800 -
1000 Mexican pesos per person in both cases. Somebody from the LOC members
will be with you during the trip and help with the accommodation,
communication etc.
El Tajin, the pre-Hispanic city is located in the state of Veracruz. The city
reached its golden age at the early 9th to the early 13th century. It became
the most important center in north-east Mesoamerica after the fall of the
Teotihuacan Empire (see
Tajin).
The City of Oaxaca located at about 300 miles south of Mexico City. It was
designated as a World heritage site by UNESCO in 1987. The city was founded in
1529, but the area has been inhabited since prehistoric times. The Monte Alban
was the capital of the Zapotec civilization from 500 B.C. to 800 A.D. It
is located on a spectacular mountaintop setting, about ten miles west of
Oaxaca city (see
Oaxaca ).
Palenque is one of the most spectacular archaeological site of Mexico in the
state of Chiapas. It is one of the most outstanding sites of the Maya area,
known for its exceptional and well conserved architectural and sculptural
remains. It takes about one day driving to reach Palenque from Puebla
and thus this excursion requires
at least
three full days and is planned to the last
weekend at the end of the workshop (see
Palenque ).
For those who will be interested to stay more in Puebla we may propose a
one day trip to the Pre-Hispanic City of Teotihuacan situated at about
50 km north-east of Mexico City with its famous Pyramids of the Sun and the
Moon (see
Teotihuacan
).
