Guillermo Haro 2013 Workshop: Galaxy structure and evolution

through Integral Field Spectroscopy: the next generation surveys

Format of the Workshop

Format of the Workshop

The scientific sessions of the workshop will run Monday to Friday, with the following overall structure. Each morning will start with two or three 20-40min talks, with ample time for discussion. The rest of the day will be self-organised at different levels to discuss and brainstorm on the large variety of topics addressed by the collaborations. In the early afternoon, a one-hour session will be devoted to discuss synergies between the different collaborations; a main topic of several of these discussions will be devoted to visualizations techniques and data management strategies. The workshop is organized around three main areas of research ('seminars') and one technical/methodological seminar. Each seminar will be lead and organized so that goals can be achieved. The main focusing seminars are:

  • Stellar populations and galaxy evolution
  • Kinematics and dynamics
  • ISM
  • Data structuring and visualization

Clearly the seminars have intersecting interests (e.g. metallicity gradients of gas and stars, star formation rates from Hα and from the star formation history, etc), so care will be taken to have a summary revision talk of issues common to two or more seminars in the morning when necessary. Notice that data structuring and visualization is an important challenge for these surveys with hundreds spectra per galaxy, and their derived physical properties, for thousands of galaxies.

Some suggested topics for afternoon discussion sessions: (i) volume correction and representativity, (ii) the problem of edge-on galaxies, (iii) efficient data analysis flows, ...

We are looking into the possibility to webcast the morning talks and some discussions.
