How to get to Puebla & Tonantzintla
Puebla is a city of 2 million people located 140 kms east of Mexico City.
It has an international airport with reduced traffic. Practically all foreign
visitors arrive through Mexico City airport, although American Airlines and
Aereo-California will start flying Dallas-Puebla direct from Dec 15.
We still assume most participants will come through Mexico City Airport.
The most convenient way to get from Mexico City Airport to Puebla is using the bus service provided by the company Estrella Roja:
- First get to Mexico City airport.
- Once there you will see that the airport is (kind of) organized in
sections denoted by a letter. International arrivals are in section "E"
while International departures are in section "F".
- Find section "D" which is some 300 metres on your left as you come out of customs.
- Buses of the company "Estrella Roja" depart just outside section "D" every 30 minutes to Puebla. A timetable can be found here.
- Buses departing at the hour arrive to Puebla bus station (known locally as CAPU) while those departing at the half arrive to a station of "Estrella Roja" located nearer to the centre of the city (locally known as "4 Poniente").
We recommend arriving at the "Estrella Roja" own station ("4 Poniente")
which is friendlier (CAPU is still ok).
- The journey takes about 1 hour 45 minutes, depending on the traffic inside Mexico City. The ticket cost about MX$60 or US$7.50- Those wanting to see some landscape (once outside Mexico City!) should sit on the right hand side of the bus.
From CAPU you can take a registered taxi to the Hotel Colonial, in the
center of Puebla. Fare should be about MX$20 and the journey is less than 15 mins.
From the Estrella Roja there are only standard (black) taxis. It is recommended to fix the prize in advance. It should also be about MX$20. The journey is even shorter (10 mins).
If you are arriving after 10pm to Mexico City we suggest you to stay at the Marriot hotel located at the Airport (no street walk involved).
