Computing Information
-
Computers: There
are 20 PCs running under LINUX available to
workshop participants. These computers will be place in the offices
where participants are assigned.
There is also a small Computer Room in office 2218 where some of these PCs
will be installed (some participants are assigned to this room).
The main characteristics of these PCs are:
- processor: Pentium III 800 Mhz
- disk: 20 Gbytes
- display: Screen 17"
- RAM: 256 Mbytes
The installed software includes IRAF, AIPS, MIDAS,...
In addition to these, all workshop participants will be able to login in the Sun workstation located in the GH offices and computer rooms.
DON'T SWITCH OFF ANY OF THESE COMPUTERS, AS THEY HOST SEVERAL HOME DIRECTORIES
- Usernames: For most of the participants, they are the same as those in their home institutes, but please check the list.
- Disk space: There aren't any quotas, but please maintain your account below the 4Gb occupancy.
- Printers: Please use the printers located in the third floor, in rooms

1305 (lw:black & white), 1304 (lw5:black & white), 2315 (lw2 & lw4:black & white) and "Coordinación de Astrofísica" (lw3:black & white and lwcx:colour)
- Printing transparencies: If you need to print colour transparencies in lwcx, please ask Rosario Sanchez for the appropiate transparencies. This printer requires special sheets.
- DAT tapes: These should be read in the Sun workstation available in
rooms
1304 (DDS2, /dev/rmt/0n to be used in peyotl workstation), 1305 (DDS4, /dev/rmt/0n to be used in aztlan workstation) and 2315 (DDS2, /dev/rmt/0n to be used in azteca workstation)
- Security IPs: If you require a security IP, please telnet to one of the workstation at INAOE (acali, calmecac, tlaloc) and use this as a platform. In particular, you will be able to read electronic Journals (ApJ, A&A, AJ, ...) just from one of these stations.
- E-mail: Please use Kmail to read your e-mail in the INAOE computers.
The first time you use it, you will have to configure it:
1. In "File", options "Settings" suboption "Identify", please fill in the fields "Name" and "Email Address" 2. In "Network" select SMTP and fill in: server: calmecac Port: 25 3. In "Incoming Mail" select "Add", this will display another window in which you will have to fill in Name: XXXXXXXX Login: xyz Password: Host: calmecac Port: 110 and select "Store POP password in config file" 4. Select "Delete mail from server" 5. Save settings with OK. - Electronic Journals (ApJ, A&A, AJ, ...) : Please use Sun workstation acali, tlaloc or calmecac

Every Wednesday or Thursday we will have a cinema projection or other cultural activity at 18:00 in the Auditorio del Centro de Información . The films exhibited in our program have been selected among the recent Mexican production that has received excellent reviews by the specialized press and/or merited international awards. The projection will be followed by a debate with one of the people involved in the film. Afterwards, we will offer a reception in Sala de Eventos.
