Computer and Electronics Workshop for girls from the communities near INAOE

Santa María Tonantzintla, Puebla, August 24, 2023. With the aim of promoting scientific and technological vocations among young Mexican women, the National Institute of Astrophysics, Optics and Electronics organizes the "Computer and Electronics Workshop for girls from the communities close to INAOE”.

The call is aimed at female students at the secondary and high school levels of the cities of San Andrés and San Pedro Cholula, Puebla capital, Atlixco and in general from all the communities near the INAOE headquarters in Tonantzintla, Puebla. INAOE is a public research center of Conahcyt.

According to information from the Exploding Topics portal, in 2022 women only held 26.7 percent of jobs in technological areas worldwide and the percentage of women in technological areas has decreased in the last two years (source: https: http://explodingtopics.com/blog/women-in-tech).

This gap is even greater in countries like Mexico, where young women do not access careers in the STEM areas (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).

The goal of this workshop is that the girls of the secondary and high school levels approach Electronics and Computer Science through workshops, talks, a conference on Mexican women in science, a demonstration of drones, visits to laboratories and the Schmidt Camera, a computational thinking workshop and a panel discussion.

The requirements to participate in the workshop are: be a middle school or high school student, be curious about how things work, be interested in science and technology, and want to learn about Electronics and Computing. Also, live in a city or community close to INAOE.
The workshop is free of charge. The quota is limited. The call will be open until September 8.
