Dr. Juan Manuel Ramírez, new president of the IEEE Measurement and Instrumentation Society

Santa María Tonantzintla, Puebla, January 16, 2023. Dr. Juan Manuel Ramírez Cortés, researcher at the Electronics Coordination of the National Institute of Astrophysics, Optics and Electronics (INAOE), was elected President of the Instrumentation and Measurement Society of the IEEE (IEEE-IMS) at the international level for the period January 2023- December 2024.
IEEE-IMS is dedicated to the development and use of electrical and electronic instruments and equipment to measure, monitor, and record physical phenomena. His fields of interest include metrology, analog and digital electronic instruments, systems and standards for measuring and recording electrical quantities, instrumentation and transducers for measuring non-electric variables, calibration and uncertainty, among others.


For Dr. Juan Manuel Ramírez, this appointment is a great honor and great responsibility. The objective, he emphasizes, is the coordination of the academic, scientific and technological activities that are being developed within the Society.
The researcher adds that the IEEE-IMS is currently made up of 76 chapters distributed practically throughout the world, in the 10 regions that make up the IEEE: "INAOE, specifically the Coordination of Electronics, maintains a strong tradition of participation in the activities of the IEEE through the Societies corresponding to our specialty areas, among which we can mention Circuits and Systems, Electronic Devices, Communications, Computing, Computational Intelligence and Instrumentation and Measurements. The IEEE-IMS annually organizes a large number of conferences, workshops and academic meetings, among which the flagship congress of the Society stands out, the International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference I2MTC. Likewise, the Society maintains the publication of three scientific journals: two Transactions and one Magazine, located within the highest level journals in the specialty”.
In a message to the members of the Society, Dr. Ramírez comments: “We have already resumed face-to-face activities in most of our conferences and technical meetings, keeping the best of available digital resources and online services where they can be used . Our Distinguished Lecturer program has begun meeting in-person speaking engagements, our chapters around the world are resuming hosting local events in support of our members, and so on. In the same way, the Administrative Committee is ready to continue moving our strategic plans with the permanent objective of serving our community through the best alternatives within our reach, so that we can fulfill our permanent objective that the IMS becomes the professional home of our affiliates. With so many talented people from our beloved community, we can certainly create the synergy necessary to provide the best chances for success.”
Dr. Juan Manuel Ramírez completed undergraduate studies at the National Polytechnic Institute and a master's degree at INAOE, and obtained his doctorate at Texas Tech University.
His lines of research are instrumentation, digital signal and image processing, computer vision, fuzzy logic, neural networks and pattern recognition.
Throughout his career he has developed various scientific projects and has directed numerous master's and doctoral theses. He has also published more than 200 scientific articles in international conferences and journals and is the author of ten book chapters. Since 2007 he is a researcher at INAOE. He is a level 2 member of the National System of Researchers.
