Professional and amateur astronomers are organized so that all of Mexico enjoys the solar eclipses of 2023 and 2024

• In October 2023 and April 2024, two solar eclipses will occur, annular and total respectively, which can be observed from our country. The next total, visible in Mexico, will occur within 28 years.
• Solar eclipses are among the most spectacular astronomical events and can be enjoyed following safety measures.
• The Mexico National Eclipses Committee has been formed, made up of educational and research institutions, groups of professional and amateur astronomers, and science communicators, who will provide information and coordinate actions so that Mexico enjoys eclipses safely.

Torreón, Coahuila, April 8th, 2022. In the next two years, Mexico will experience wonderful moments under the shadow of the Moon. On October 14, 2023 we will have the opportunity to observe an annular solar eclipse in the southeast region of the country and, on April 8, 2024 we will have a total solar eclipse that will cross the northern part of the country. The National Committee of Eclipses Mexico, made up of professional astronomers, amateurs, and science communicators, has been formed to provide truthful and accurate information.

Solar eclipses are, without a doubt, the astronomical phenomena that have most impacted and intrigued humanity throughout history, particularly those that are total. And, it is not for less since, for a few minutes, the solar disk is hidden by the Moon, making the day turn into night.

The last time we had the opportunity to observe a total solar eclipse in Mexico was on July 11, 1991, more than 30 years ago. The strip of totality covered a large part of the country and is remembered as one of the longest in modern history. A few years later, on May 10, 1994, another solar eclipse could be seen in the northwest of the country, but this time it was annular.

In the next two years, these experiences will be repeated. On October 14, 2023 we will have the opportunity to observe an annular solar eclipse whose maximum occultation strip will cross the states of Quintana Roo, Campeche, and Yucatán. Six months later, on April 8, 2024, the central part of a total eclipse will travel through three states in northern Mexico: Sinaloa, Durango and Coahuila. In the rest of the country, both eclipses will be seen as partial.

We must not waste these opportunities, the next total eclipse of the Sun that will be seen in Mexico will occur until the year 2052.

To ensure that civil society and government actors have accurate and truthful information to safely enjoy these wonderful events, the Mexico National Eclipses Committee was formed with educational institutions and organizations dedicated to developing and promoting scientific knowledge, as well as as to spread the wonders of the Cosmos.

Currently, the committee is made up of the Institute of Astronomy (IA), the Institute of Radioastronomy and Astrophysics (IRyA) and the National School of Higher Studies Mérida Unit (ENES) of UNAM, the National Institute of Astrophysics, Optics and Electronics ( INAOE), the Autonomous University of Sinaloa (UAS), the Autonomous University of Nuevo León (UANL), the National Network of State Science and Technology Councils (REDNACECyT), the Network of Planetariums of Quintana Roo, the Planetarium of Torreón, the Night of the Stars (NdE) and Kosmos Scientific of Mexico, as well as by groups of amateur astronomers and other civil society organizations.

After a year of working together, this April 8, just two years before the total eclipse, we present the Mexico National Eclipses Committee and some of its plans and activities. All this within the framework of the inauguration of the Puerto Naos Astronomical Observatory in the City of Torreón, a place where will be able to enjoy the totality of the 2024 eclipse.
