A space of 1.2-meter width and at least 1.5-meter height will be available for each poster. You are expected to put your poster on Monday before the beginning of the lectures and remove it on Friday. The lectures will be published by World Scientific, edited by Aretxaga, Kunth & Mujica. REGISTRATION Registration for the Lectures will begin on Sunday June 25, at 7:00 PM at the INAOE grounds. The registration will continue on Monday morning. Registration Fee The Advanced Lectures registration fee is 250 US$. You will be required to pay the amount in cash upon arrival. We regret that we are NOT able to process credit card payments. Important: PLEASE NOTE THAT PAYMENTS AT THE REGISTRATION DESK SHOULD BE MADE IN CASH OR TRAVELER CHECKS (US dollars or Mexican pesos; no personal checks or credit cards). PAYMENTS FOR HOTELS ROOMS SHOULD ALSO BE MADE AT THE REGISTRATION DESK OF THE Advanced Lectures on Sunday or Monday. You will have to settle your service bills (telephone, bar, ...) at the hotel desk when you check out. LOCAL INFORMATION Money The Mexican currency is the mexican peso($). The present exchange rate with the U.S. dollar is about $9.6 = 1.0 US$, but this changes more rapidly than we would like. Please make sure you have some pesos with you BEFORE leaving the Mexico City airport, where there are plenty of currency exchange offices. Once in Mexico, not all places take US dollars or traveler's checks. Foreign credit cards are accepted in major restaurants, stores, and hotels. Best exchange rates are found in CASAS de CAMBIO (exchange houses) open only on weekdays, usually from 9am to 5 pm. Most banks open only on weekdays, also from 9 am to 5 pm. The airport has 24 hour money exchange counters. USA cash or travelers checks are easier to change into pesos than other types of currency. Weather Puebla is located at an altitude of 2200 meters (7100 feet). There is usually no rain during the spring, but it gets rainy during the summer and about the middle of autumn. The temperature varies from some 30 C (85-90 F) in the daytime to about 10 C (50 F) in the night/morning. Note that the air is thin, and it can get cool at night. Language Spanish is the official language in Mexico. Because Puebla is not overly frequented by tourists, few people speak English. We advise you to have a good dictionary and a phrasebook when you venture out. Food Mexican cuisine is among the best in the world, but those visiting for the first time should take some precautions. There are some spicy sauces (salsas picantes) which could be very aggressive to unaware mouths: before adding any sauce to your food, try a small amount of it in a piece of bread. Also, to avoid traveler's diarrhea (or any other stomach disease), do not drink tap water and do not eat raw fruits or vegetables without skin. Drink only bottled water. Meals Hotel prices include breakfast (except UDLA). Lunch will be served at INAOE, it will cost around 7-8 US$ per meal. For dinner, there are several restaurants in Cholula's downtown that are open till late at night. PLANNED SOCIAL EVENTS SUNDAY 7:00 PM at INAOE ---- WELCOME COCKTAIL The registration at INAOE will be accompanied by A WELCOME COCKTAIL. WEDNESDAY afternoon --- VISIT to historical places. Visits to the historical pyramid in Cholula and the ancient Church of Santa Maria Tonantzintla. An optional tour to the ruins of Cacaxtla with very colorful frescos will also be offered. THURSDAY 8:00 PM Advanced Lectures DINNER at Restaurante of the Hotel Camino Real The Advanced Lectures dinner is OPTIONAL and will have a cost of aprox. 350 Mexican pesos. It includes soft and alcoholic drinks and a dancing afterwards. GETTING TO PUEBLA Transportation from the Mexico City (D.F.) airport to Puebla: there is a comfortable bus service by "Estrella Roja" which runs from Mexico City airport to the city of Puebla every 30 minutes. These leave from the airport zone D, next to International Arrivals (zone E). The fare is $100.00 Pesos ($180.00 Pesos if you buy the return ticket). The tickets can be purchased in a ticketbooth near the bus stop. The ride takes about two hours. Those wanting to see the volcanoes (once outside Mexico City!) should sit on the right hand side of the bus. Buses departing at the hour (13:00, 14:00, 15:00, etc...) arrive to Puebla bus station (known locally as CAPU) while those departing at the half-hour (13:30, 14:30, 15:30, etc...) arrive to station of "4 Poniente" located nearer to Puebla's downtown. A complete timetable is below. We recommend you to take the bus to CAPU, where taxis have fixed prices. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From Puebla to D.F. airport From D.F. airport to Puebla ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Departures From Departures From Departures To Departures To CAPU 4 Poniente CAPU 4 Poniente ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 3:00 3:30 6:00 6:30 4:00 4:30 7:00 7:30 5:00 5:30 7:40 8:30 6:00 6:30 8:00 9:30 7:00 7:00 9:00 10:30 8:00 7:30 10:00 11:30 9:00 8:00 11:00 12:30 10:00 8:30 12:00 13:30 11:00 9:30 13:00 14:30 12:00 10:00 13:40 15:30 13:00 10:30 14:00 16:30 14:00 11:30 14:40 17:10 15:00 12:30 15:00 17:30 16:00 13:30 16:00 18:30 17:00 14:00 17:00 19:30 18:00 14:30 18:00 20:10 19:00 15:30 19:00 20:30 20:00 16:00 20:00 21:30 16:30 21:00 22:30 17:00 22:00 23:30 17:30 23:00 24:20 18:30 19:30 20:30 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- If arriving to CAPU we recommend that you get a regulated taxi ticket (at one of the kiosks with a TAXIS sign on it) to Tonantzintla ($60 Pesos, add 5 Pesos if you arrive after 10:00 PM, the ride to Tonantzintla takes some 20 minutes) or to Cholula (aprox. $60 pesos, 15 minutes). Make sure you take a yellow and white taxi. Tell the taxi driver to drop you at "El Observatorio" in Tonantzintla. If you are hosted in a hotel in Cholula, just tell the taxi driver the hotel's name. From the "4 Poniente" station there are only standard (black) taxis. It is recommended to fix the prize in advance (it should also be aprox. $70 Pesos to Tonantzintla, $30 pesos to downtown Puebla, $50 pesos to Cholula). Nevertheless, there will be some students from INAOE at the BUS STATIONS in Puebla (CAPU & 4 poniente). They will have an INAOE logo as ID and will help you to take the correct taxi and to give instructions to the taxi drivers if it is necessary. If you are driving to Tonantzintla, the basic instruction is to go to the city of Puebla (120 kms East), then after entering town head to Cholula (8 kms West) and from there to Tonantzintla (5 kms South). To make life easier, exiting the airport you have to take "boulevard aeropuerto" to the south, after some 3 to 5 kms take "Calzada Ignacio Zaragoza", a wide kind of freeway road, towards the East. After some 15 kms it leads to the beginning of the motorway. Take "Puebla cuota" and NOT "Puebla libre" (a mountain road). Transportation will be offered from your hotel in Cholula to Tonantzintla daily. On Sunday evening there will be transportation to Tonantzintla at 6:30 and 7:30 pm for the reception. If you plan to arrive later and want to attend the reception, we suggest you to take a taxi. The taxi company that provides service to the UDLA will offer its service to INAOE during the Lectures, it is safe and will give us a special price. The phone number is: 2 23 77 99. Mention INAOE or "Observatorio de Tonantzintla". The people at the hotel reception desk can help you. ADDRESSES The relevant addresses for the Lectures are: * INAOE(Observatorio de Tonantzintla).
